NP leads LVL
The North Parkland pitching staff has been consistently solid to start the season, giving up a total of four runs in four games heading into Sunday's double-header against South Parkland and Northern Valley.
After another stellar outing and a 10-3 victory over South Parkland, Northern Valley got a first-hand look at virtually the entire Buffaloes' rotation.
Because of the upcoming Carpeter's Cup, five different pitchers took the mound against the Chargers.
Walter Roland got the win, and pitched the final two innings and struck out four, as the Buffaloes captured the 5-4 victory in eight innings at Northwestern High School.
"I was just working the outside part of the plate," said Roland. "I got them reaching, and then when I wanted to shut them down I came in with the curveball. I had good command with that today."
The Chargers tied the game 4-4 in the sixth inning, and forced the game into extra innings. But it didn't take long for the Buffaloes to retake the lead. Justin Afflerbach started off the eighth with a double. Gabriel Mosser's RBI-single three batters later gave the Buffaloes a 5-4 lead.
"I was just trying to hit the ball the other way," said Mosser. "See a good pitch and drive it in the gap. I didn't want to pop it up."
Mosser also pitched the fourth and fifth innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two Charger batters. He was 2-for-3 from the plate with two RBIs.
"Pretty much my fastball, I felt like I was throwing harder than normal," said Mosser. "And my knuckleball was working pretty well too."
While the Buffalo offense has struggled in the early portion of the season, the bats came alive in both games Sunday, tallying a total of 15 runs. Trailing 3-1 after three innings, the Buffaloes responded in the fourth.
Roland, who went 2-for-3 in the game, led off the fourth with a single. Brett Kosciolek lined a single into left field two batters later. Afflerbach then launched his second of four hits, a double to deep center field, that scored Roland. Kosciolek and Afflerbach later scored in the inning to put the Buffaloes ahead 4-3.
"We hit them hard," said Mosser. "We just hit the spots where we needed. We produced runs and that's what we needed to do pretty much."
Kosciolek hit a solo homerun and went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. He also pitched the sixth inning and allowed a run.
Roland, who pitched a no-hitter in the team's first game of the year and recorded nine strikeouts, continues to pitch well on the mound. He earned Lehigh Valley League Pitcher of the Week honors for his efforts last week.
"Recognition is always nice," said Roland. "But we just have to come out every game and not let anything get us too confident."
Results from Tuesday's game against Northern Valley and Wednesday's game against Salisbury were not available at time of press. The Buffaloes will face Lower Mac on Thursday at Church Lane Park.
After a day off Monday, North Parkland led the league at 5-1 with 12 games left in the season. The team was slated to play seven games in six days beginning Tuesday, June 18.
