Lower Macungie Column
Lower Macungie Township is currently looking to fill a vacancy on the Public Safety Commission. The deadline to submit an application for this vacancy is July 1. Applications can be found on www.lowermac.com. Volunteer applications are always accepted for any board or commission. Throughout the months of June and July, Lower Macungie Library will feature the acrylic and acrylic ink paintings of Catherine Rhoades.
The library Book Club will meet 10:30 a.m. July 10 to discuss "Atonement" by Ian McEwan. The book for Aug. 7 is "The Spanish Match" by Brennan Purcell.
The Summer Reading Club kickoff will take place 6 p.m. June 24. The theme this year is "Dig Into Reading@Your Library." DJ JIMBO will play music and there will be Rita's Ice sponsored by Ai Orthodontics.
The iDig Family Night will be held on Monday evenings at 6:30 p.m. beginning July 1. Contact the library for more information regarding the programs.
There is also a Summer Reading Club for adults. Signups begin June 24. A ticket for each book read is entered into a weekly raffle. The final drawing will be held Aug. 7. In addition, several programs for adults will be offered on Wednesday evenings.
Author and Vietnam veteran Larry Deibert will speak at 6 p.m. June 26.
On July 10, author Katherine Ramsland will visit 6 p.m. at the Lower Macungie Township Community Center. Among her works are her investigation of the vampire subculture, two vampire novels and a nonfiction book "The Science of Vampires."
There will be a presentation "Exploring Caves" 6:30 p.m. July 17. Dean Snyder from the Pennsylvania Cave Conservancy will discuss the significance of caves and what cavers do.
There will be a Sand Castle storytime for ages two to six years 10 a.m. July 6.
There will be a Books for Breakfast book discussion for grades four through seven 9:30 a.m. July 20. The book will be "City of Ember."
There will be iDig drop-by storytimes for children ages two to six years 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays.
Adult computer classes including Microsoft Word, Excel, Intro to the Web and social networking are offered monthly. The schedule is available at the library.
Class size is limited and registration is required for the above events.

The Friends of the Lower Macungie Library will meet 10 a.m. Sept. 14 in the library.
The Friends will sponsor a bus trip Sept. 21 to the National Book Festival on the Mall in Washington, D.C. If interested, contact Joyce at 610-395-1475.
Fall 2013 sports registration for Lower Macungie Youth Association is open online. Sports offered include baseball, cheerleading, field hockey, football, lacrosse, soccer, softball and volleyball. The website is www. lmya.org.

The Lower Macungie Pool will open noon to 8 p.m. daily through July 31. The pool will close 4:45 p.m. June 19 and 27 and July 3 and 11 for swim meets. There will be a Dip and Dance 1 to 3 p.m. June 28. On July 14 Tom Yurasits will perform a magic show 3 to 3:45 p.m. There will be a Dip and Dance and Family Fun Night 1 to 3 p.m. July 17. The Macungie Band will perform 7 p.m. July 20 at Hills at Lockridge.
The fourth annual craft/vendor fair will take place 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 23 at the community center. Vendor spaces are available on a first come, first served basis. Register at the community center or download the form at www.lowermac.com.
The Lower Macungie Senior Citizens Club meets at noon July 2 and 16 at the community center. After a business meeting, members play bingo or card games. On July 16, the games are followed by special entertainment.

The Lower Macungie Township Community Center offers a number of activities including Walkercise, yoga, pilates, and Zumba. Upcoming classes include acting and sewing classes for adults, Couch to 5K, and children's tennis lessons. Summer children's classes include Art Camp, Minecraft Camp, Spy Training Camp, Mad Science and CSI: Critter Scene Investigators.
There will be a safe sitter program offered by Lehigh Valley Health Network for children ages 11 to 14 years 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 27 at the Community Center.

The township offers discounted movie tickets for Regal Entertainment as well as discounted tickets for Camelbeach, Dorney Park, Hersheypark, Philadelphia Zoo and Six Flags.
Family Open Gym time is 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays for ages infant through 10 years with a parent. Proof of residency is required.
Yard waste site hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday. The site is closed on Tuesday and Thursday. Be prepared to show your photo id as proof of residency.
With three children in the house, it is sometimes hard to have a private conversation. One evening while dinner was cooking, Matt and I retreated to the living room to discuss the day's happenings. Seconds later Benjamin came wandering in. We asked him to leave so we could have a few moments to talk. He replied, "Okay. But no kissing. That would be inappropriate."
