At the June 12 meeting, Alburtis Borough Council passed a motion to award the Church Street Roadway Resurfacing/Reconstruction Project to B.F. Brown & Co., Inc., in the amount of $157,832.50, after Executive Secretary Sharon Trexler checks to make sure the curbing and sidewalks are included in the bid. Keystone Consulting Engineers recommended Brown as the lowest responsible bidder.
Borough maintenance will be doing the overlay work on Third Street before school starts. Instead of taking out a loan for over $200,000, council is considering borrowing from the water and sewer account to pay for these projects. Councilperson Kathleen Raines suggested a plan be worked out to make sure all the money is paid back. A motion was passed that Councilperson John Aleszczyk meet with the budget committee to work out the loan.
Hill said a check for $26,000 was received from Herman Sulderits for payment of the liens against The Iron Horse Inn.
Trexler asked for and was given permission for maintenance workers to discontinue use of their pagers, as the pagers are no longer needed.
"The people using the borough Dumpster are overfilling it," Councilperson David Lehr said. The Dumpster is emptied about once a week during the spring and summer months, Hill said, and if it is full when people have things to put in it, they should take their stuff back home and bring it again when the Dumpster has been emptied.
Mayor Kathleen Palmer received a letter from Sure Fit Inc., 8000 Quarry Road, Alburtis, stating the facility will begin permanent layoff of 75 of its 103 employees Aug. 2 and that facility will be permanently closed by Feb. 28, 2014. The 28 employees remaining will be transferred to another facility nearby.
