Area students earn Gates awards

Six Bethlehem area career and technical education students were among 38 seniors honored recently with an Elmer Gates Enterprise Award. Recognized for their scholastic achievement, community service, entrepreneurial spirit and involvement in SkillsUSA were John C. Rodriguez and John J. Silver from Freedom HS; Andrew J. Kopczynskie and Israwl Marcano from Liberty HS; and Carlissa A. Gross and Ethan Gaither from Saucon Valley HS. Students received a plaque, citations from national and state legislators and a savings bond from the Gates Family Foundation.

Elmer Gates, former CEO of the Fuller engineering company of Bethlehem and a founder of Embassy Bank, addressed the students and approximately 300 family members, school personnel, business and community supporters.

Broughal MS: Crain Club raises $500

Broughal's Paper Crane Club raised $500 through their t-shirt fundraiser. Mrs. Bothwell helped with the t-shirts and Joanne Check handled the t-shirt orders. Art teachers Ms. Zellner and Mrs. Berkenstock helped with the t-shirt logo. Sue Berkenstock, an art teacher at Fountain Hill, and Carol Kreitz, a retired school teacher from the Governor Wolf Elementary School and a cancer survivor, helpred to with the selling. The donation will be sent to St. Jude Hospital in honor of Carol Kreitz.

They also made 2000 paper cranes under the organization and supervision of Mrs. Simpson. 50 of the cranes to symbolize hope, the book "Sadako" which inspired us to form this club, and a brief letter explaining the mission of the Broughal Paper Crane Club from Broughal Middle School 6th Grade students Guadalupe and Fatima Montero and also from Michelle Leanor-Hernandez, the Paper Crane Club's founding members, will also be included with the donation.

Notre Dame HS: Debate semi-finalists

The Notre Dame Speech and Debate Team competed at the National Catholic Forensic League Grand National Tournament held May 25 and26 in Philadelphia.

Abigail Marone won a semifinalist award in Student Congress. She was one of 54 out of over 220 contestants in her category to qualify for semifinals.Other Notre Dame participants were Ben Borakove (Extemp), Mario D' Aniello (Original Oratory), Stella Kim (Declamation) Caroline Kurtz (Declamation) Sara Prager (Oral Interpretation), and Kelsey Rosa (Oral Interpretation).
