Once again, Coplay Borough Council is looking for a new member.

At Tuesday night's meeting, Councilman Matthew Recker announced his resignation.

"I have nothing to report for my committee but I do have a letter here for [council] President [Lou] Bodish and borough council," said Recker. He chairs the parks and recreation committee, which oversees the pool. (See related story, page 5).

"I sincerely regret having to submit my resignation as a member of borough council," said Recker, reading from a prepared statement. "My family and I will be moving to the Whitehall area. We have looked for ... properties in the borough but were unable to find a home to meet our family needs."

Recker said his resignation is effective June 30.

This is the third time in a year a member of council has resigned.

In September 2012, Charles Sodl was appointed to fill the seat vacated by Marvin Mann, who resigned in August 2012.

Steve Burker was appointed to council in March following the resignation of Michael Mazur in January.

Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to accept Recker's resignation.

Solicitor James Preston noted the borough has 30 days from Recker's last day to appoint someone. This gives council until the end of July.

Council also voted unanimously to advertise for letters of interest for the council position.

Anyone interested must submit a letter of interest to the borough office by 3 p.m. July 2 – the date of the next council workshop.

Candidates are not required to attend the meeting but will be advised that they should, borough Secretary-Treasurer Sandra Gyecsek said after the meeting.

"I appreciate your service and I admire anyone who gets into the fray of ... politics," Councilman Bill Leiner Jr. told Recker.

Saying he believes Recker did a good job, he added, "I'm sorry to hear you're leaving Coplay."

"I enjoyed my time on council," Recker said, reading his letter.

"It has been a privilege to serve on this borough council ... I'll miss the work we do on behalf of the community."
