SCOUTS
The Board of Commissioners had the pleasure of presenting a proclamation to an Eagle Scout for his achievement at their meeting June 6.
Robert Ross, from Troop 131, built a secured storage unit for the Lower Macungie Township swim team.
Commissioner Douglas Brown said "this is one of my favorite things to do as a commissioner… award proclamations to the Scouts," adding "only 7 percent of Scouts make Eagle Scout."
Brown said another young man is proposing a project for the township for his Eagle Scout project. Adam Banko has planned for a trail at Camp Olympic which will begin at the lower entrance where the asphalt ends and end at Olympic Ridge Drive. The trail will allow Olympic Ridge residents access to Camp Olympic The project consists of clearing a path by removing fallen trees and eliminating brush. The trail will be clearly defined and will include a lookout point at the top where a park bench will be installed to overlook the stream below. Banko will have 10 to 12 helpers including adults for driving and electrical tools. Several family members and fellow Scouts will also help with this project which Banko expects to have completed by the end of June. The expected costs of $500 are being contributed by the township.
Giant Food store sent a letter to the township expressing opposition to the Tax Increment Financing planned for Hamilton Crossings. This action will unfairly penalize existing businesses. "It will allow for a loss of jobs," President Richard Herring said. Herring is questioning the TIF since TIF districts are "blighted areas that are truly in need of redevelopment.
The commissioners and others responded with opposition to this letter. It was discussed Giant received several variances, was able to relocate and add a gas station.
The Church Lane Bridge was scheduled to open noon June 10. This is welcome news for township residents as well as many others.
Bid awards were announced for the Willow Lane Elementary School. Charles Higgins was awarded the signalization project in the amount of $29,000. A. Rohrbach was awarded the ADA ramps and crosswalk projects for approximately $105,000. Construction is to be completed well within the necessary time.
Two resolutions were approved for these projects, one for the Willow Street side, and the other for the Mill Creek Road side. Crossing guards will be hired by the township with the cost of their employment being divided in half by the school district and township. Six crossing guards are necessary with extra guards being hired for times of absenteeism. The hourly rate will be $13.65 a hour. Applications are being accepted by the township through July 12.
