Jeff's look to get above .500

It's been a battle of close matchups thus far for Bethlehem Jeff's in the NORCO legion campaign this month.

Jeff's currently sit at 1-3 through the calendar, with most of their contests being within striking distance of varying results.

Outside of a 14-1 loss to Freemansburg, Jeff's have been in every contest, losing 8-7 to Hellertown, 5-4 to Northampton before salvaging their first win of the season, a 2-0 victory over the Wanderers.

Head coach Paul Henning wants to make the playoffs with this group after coming up short last year following a 9-12 finish.

He'll look to three key players to help dig the club out of their current hole, led by Zach Kantor (Liberty/pitcher), Seaver Hoyak (Notre Dame/SS) and Abner Santana (Liberty/catcher).

"We need to improve our defense and hit the ball better if we want to reach that goal," said Henning. "Pitching is pretty good and we want to make the playoffs."

Jeff's contest on Monday against Nazareth was postponed due to rain and they were scheduled to play Bath on Tuesday. They battle the Birches on Wednesday, followed by Saturday's tilt with Big Pocono.

Henning knows that a quick turnaround will be needed for his team to avoid a deeper hole in the legion standings, but working through the various legion obstacles of the summer are always highlighted.

"Biggest obstacle is putting a team together in a very short period of time," he said. "Working around high school schedules, vacations and boys work schedules are all things we have to deal with.
