LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Bath aiming to repeat

Bath is looking to replicate a memorable 2012 summer this time around with another crop of talented players on their legion roster again.

Following a 28-5 season a year ago, which saw them win the NORCO title and reach the Region 2 finals last year, head coach Gene Sostarecz expects his team to be in similar position this season, as the team is off to a 2-0 start following wins over Northampton and Nazareth.

"We want to repeat as league champs and go further than we did a year ago in regionals," said Sostarecz, who enters his second year at the helm. "A lot of the guys we had a year ago are back and we should be a very good team again this year."

Back in the fold for Bath includes a large contingent of Liberty players including Pat Donnelly, Jake Tone, Ed Albertson, Tommy Epsaro and Matt Leon.

Bethlehem Catholic has three representatives in Pat Mergel, Dave Derkits and Connor Ryan.

With all the returning talent back for Bath, there is no reason that they shouldn't lead the charge this summer in NORCO.

That's why having higher stakes this season is expected for this group.

"We went 4-2 in regionals last year and we feel like things got away from us in the final," said Sostarecz in reference to a 5-4 loss to Doylestown in the regional final last year.

"I feel very confident in what we can do this year with this group, especially with having five good pitchers on the staff. "As we all know, that's very important for any team during the summer when you have so many games in such a short amount of time."

Another factor that will impact all teams is the introduction of a full-time wooden bat, which can put a damper on scoring runs on some nights.

"It's totally different with wooden bats," Sostarecz said. "Some nights you just never know how the hitting is going to be. That's why it's even more important to have good guys throwing every night."

Bath took on Jeffs yesterday and host Wilson tonight at 8pm. They then hit the road Friday and Saturday with games against Wind Gap and Palmer Township respectively to round out the week.
