Season ends with loss to Pen Argyl
Pen Argyl has defeated Catasauqua High School in two District 11 Championships in one school year after the Rough Riders had won Colonial League crowns in football and softball.
The Lady Green Knights prevailed 3-1 at Parkland High School last Thursday night in the 2A softball finals. Catasauqua had to settle for silver medals for the third time this school year. The boys basketball team were District 11 runners-up
Catty head coach Bobby Thomas instructed his troops hit early and often, but Catty couldn't do it as they only managed six hits off Emily Smull, who threw her trademark game of painting the corners and holding the Lady Roughies hitless until the fourth. The Rough Riders left seven runners on base.
Catty senior third baseman Jordan Dardas (2-for-3), who played an excellent game at third base chased a riser and Shea O'Brien was fooled on back-to-back strikeouts in the second inning after Catty went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first. Smull lived on the outside of the plate.
In the fourth inning, Pen Argyl struck first as Brittany Ruch (1-for-3), the designated player, walked. Madisyn Einfalt plastered an RBI double over the head of Hannah Edwards who tried to close the gap. Rachel Warren laid down her second, excellent bunt single of the game. Warren then tried to steal second but was nailed by the great arm of Janae Matos to Paige Kogelman. But, leadoff hitter Laura Zanette hit an RBI single scoring Einfalt.
Kogelman (1-for-3), who wants to play both field hockey and softball at West Chester University, singled to start a Catty rally. Matos was walked. Jordan Dardas (2-for-3), who plans to play softball at East Stroudsburg, had a slap hit to left field. Matos was thrown out going to third. Junior designated player Shea O'Brien stroked an RBI single scoring Kogelman, but that's all Catty would get.
Erika Lebron singled in the fifth and Dardas did so in the sixth. But, Catty couldn't push the runners past Pen Argyl's defense on the left side with Alyssa Weaver (1-for-4) at shortstop and Zanette (1-for-4) at the hot corner.
Catty had one last chance at the Green Knights. Pinch hitter and sophomore Shiloh Sziy kept battling with a 3-2 count and fouled off three more pitches before being struck out. Freshman first baseman Olivia Schlofer grounded out before freshman leadoff batter Edwards (1-for-4) singled to left field. Lebron (1-for-4) flew out to right field to end the game.
Pen Argyl graduates five players and Catasauqua three. Both pitchers will be back as Ayache is just a 10th grader at Catty while Smull a junior. Catty's Danielle Lilly showed good leatherwork at shortstop all night and is now on the radar of college coaches, as is Janae Matos and freshman Edwards, who had St. Joseph's University scouting her.
