STUDENT OF THE WEEK Lydia Fletcher
Q: What grade are you in?
A: I am a senior at Emmaus High School.
Q: What is your favorite subject? Why?
A: My favorites would have to be biology and history. I like biology because it's really interesting to learn about the world around us, how complex a little cell can be and how life is so diverse yet similar at the same time. History shows how similar we are, whether in the 500s or 2000s, humans are motivated by the same things and history is always repeated.
Q: Have you received any special awards or recognition?
A: My debate team recently placed second in our division. Also I am a member of National Honor Society and the National French Honor Society.
Q: Are you involved in any extracurricular activities?
A: In addition to being co-captain of debate team, I was also on the tennis team and a member of the French club. Outside of school, I am involved in Girl Scouts. I also enjoy reading, baking, cooking, music and doing anything outside.
Q: What is your next goal after high school?
A: I'm attending Binghamton University in the fall, majoring in anthropology and hopefully enrolling in their 5-year masters' plan. Also I hope to travel around a lot.
Q: What would you say your biggest challenge has been so far?
A: My biggest challenge would be accepting what has happened in the past has happened and that it can't be changed, you just have to look forward to the future. Also I've been challenged with becoming my own individual, not just blending into the crowd. Blending is sometimes easier but it is so important to be yourself.
Q: What do you want to be remembered for?
A: Someone who worked hard but was never too distracted to sit down and talk to someone or help them out.
Q: Who is in your family?
A: My family includes my dad, Matt, my mom, Mary, my little sister, Caroline, my little brother, Ben and my beautiful dog, Annie.
Q: Do you have someone you look up to?
A: Both my parents, but especially my dad. He's a really smart guy but he's always interested in learning new things and getting involved in discussions. He's a patient teacher and a really funny guy. Also the rapper Macklemore who proved you don't need a big label to become famous, just hard work and dedication.
Q: Do you have any advice for your peers?
A: Be yourself. Have fun. Do what makes you happy. Realize everyone has something different to offer and accept the differences. You will learn more.
