Firefighters revive stricken homeowner

Two Eastern Salisbury firefighters are credited with reviving a Salisbury resident who went into cardiac arrest while fighting a brush fire on his property. Volunteers from Eastern Salisbury Fire Department responded to fight a brush fire in the 2300 block of Dauphin Street about 5 p.m. May 3. Upon arriving and deploying to fight the fire, other firefighters noticed the homeowner, who had been fighting the fire with a garden hose, had collapsed. Other firefighters called out to ESFD Rescue Captain Kyle Mertl and Firefighter Andrew DeMasi, who began CPR and applied an automatic electronic defibrillator device to shock the man's heart. The quick first aid revived the homeowner. With a smile, Mertl said "he was able to talk with us as he was being loaded into an ambulance" for a trip to the hospital." Mertl and DeMasi were pleased, but modest, at the outcome of the event. "Just a matter of being at the right place at the right time," they indicated.
