Districts next for Zephyrs
Fresh off a league championship, the Zephyr baseball team will try to build on history by adding a district championship to their 2013 résumé.
The district playoffs get under way May 22 for the Zephyrs (19-2), who enter the tourney as the number-one seed, hosting Freedom High School (13-8) in pursuit of a second title.
While a Lehigh Valley Conference Baseball Championship was a first, they won a District 11 4A title in 2008, defeating Liberty 11-10 to claim that crown.
This year's team will try to duplicate that feat, but manager Shaun O'Boyle knows it will be no easy task. He said that this tourney will test them and they'll have to be prepared.
"They're all really good teams," said O'Boyle. "There are no gimmies anymore."
The goal is to keep accumulating as much hardware as possible. O'Boyle said they accomplished their first goal, and now it's a matter of continuing that journey.
"Now it's a district title, then a state championship," said O'Boyle.
In order to achieve those goals, O'Boyle said the blueprint is pretty basic. It's what he preaches every day.
"The key is throwing strikes," said O'Boyle. "When we don't walk people, we win."
To underscore that point, O'Boyle said that their two wins in the league championship series saw them surrender just one walk.
"When we throw strikes and hit, we're going to be in every game," he said.
Their opening round opponent played Monday evening, with Freedom defeating Northampton Area High School 4-3 to set up the match with the Zephs. O'Boyle will open the playoffs with senior Jake Wloczewski on the mound. If Northampton had won, he would have opted for Elliot Mortimer since Wloczewski faced the Kids twice this year.
The Zephs won the game 10-0 against the Pates on April 24. The Pates enter the tourney as the eighth seed. O'Boyle said that they'll apply the same offensive mindset when approaching the district game against Freedom.
"We want to put the ball in play, and we want to put it on play real hard" said O'Boyle. "If we put it in play by hitting it hard, teams are going to make mistakes."
O'Boyle pointed to the game against Parkland in the championship to illustrate the point, indicating they got additional runs by putting pressure on the Trojans, sparking some errors.
He also said that they're seeing the ball well right now and that's been helping them stay consistent at the plate.
Last year they won two games before bowing out in the semifinals to Liberty High School. This year they would like to go all the way and add another trophy to their case.
