L. MACUNGIE TWP. BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS Community Day a success

Dennis Timmer, president of the parks and recreation board, praised Denise Foulke and others for the Lower Macungie Community Day event via a letter read at the May 16 meeting.

"Judging the year-to-year improvement and attendance over the last three years, it does get better." There might be a possibility of it becoming a full-day event with more vendors. Parks and Recreation board members extended their appreciation for a job well done to Foulke and all others involved. Medevac and two state police cars were also on hand which were a big attraction for all in attendance.

Eagle Scout Seth Workman was presented with a proclamation from the township. The commissioners presented this to Workman for constructing 18 games sent to the Troops overseas. Workman is from Troop 431. Alburtis was congratulated on its 100th anniversary.

There was a shredding event held at the community center in conjunction with the office of State Rep. Ryan Mackenzie, R-134th. Over eight tons of paper were shredded and the event was very well received.

The Church Lane Bridge construction has begun with a completion date by the end of May.

The Lower Macungie swimming pool will open May 25.

The bidding process has begun for the Lower Macungie Township portion of the Willow Lane Elementary school "walking" project which includes crosswalks, Americans with Disabilities Act compliant ramps and school zone flashers. The bids are due by May 28.

Former Commissioner Joe Pugliese has been appointed to the chair position for the audit committee. Pugliese has been a certified public accountant for 30 years.

Macungie Police Chief Edward Harry requested use of roads in Lower Macungie Township for a detour during the annual Memorial Day parade in Macungie. This was approved and includes Willow Lane, Sauerkraut Lane and Brookside Road.

There was a hearing for approval of an addition made to a property on Schoeneck Road. This is Lehigh Valley South Industrial Park, Lot 21. The plan was presented and approved. More information is available at lowermac.com.

A new road crew chief was approved. Randy Schmeltze, of Zionsville, was named to replace the current crew chief who is retiring.

The false fire alarm policy was discussed. With 30 to 40 percent of fire alarms being false, it was suggested to change allowed false alarms from three a year to one every six months. Residential false alarms are fined at $150 and commercial false alarms are $300. These are summary offenses and taken to the magistrate.
