LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

WHS strong at LVC meet

Lightning may have hampered the second day of the Lehigh Valley Conference /Colonial League Track and Field Championships, but it didn't dampen the effort by the Zephyrs who were able to put together a strong performance.

The boys finished in fifth place with 65 points, while the girls earned the eighth spot with 46.50 points. The Championships were won on the boys side by Parkland High School, and by Emmaus High School for the girls.

Head coach Jim Sebesta said that the boys could have finished as high as third, but suffered some disqualifications that prevented them from getting into the top tier.

Still, he was pleased with their accomplishment among the 14 boys teams and 12 girls teams at the LVC/CL meet held at the Zephyr Sports Complex last week.

"Overall, I was kind of happy with it," said Sebesta who will now prepare his team for the District XI meet this week. "It was a real good showing."

The Zephs had a number of quality performances led by their relay teams with the boys 4x800 team finishing second with a 8:15.84 mark. That team featured Brian Plucinsky, JC Falcon, Michael Leonhardt and Michael Eible. The girls also had a good showing in the 4x800, finishing third in 9:52.45 as LeAnna Cruz, Natalee Rackus, Angela Stella and Emily Brand took those honors.

In the other running events, Leonhardt was third in the 800, crossing the line in 2:01.17.

Sebesta said that the senior was leading down the stretch, but left the inside open allowing two competitors to pass.

Additionally, sprinter John Johnson finished fifth in the 100 and was fourth in the 200.

Angela Stella had a stellar showing as well, finishing second in the 800 with a 2:21.00 mark.

In the jumps, Falcon rose to the occasion once again, placing second in the high jump with a 6-01.00 leap.

Kyleem Harrison finished fifth in the triple jump with a 40-11.00 mark, and Ivanna Jones was sixth in the high jump (4-11).

Jake Wygant also had a good meet, finishing second in the shot put with a 48-02.00 mark.

In the discus, Kenneth Christine-Mann nailed down the fourth spot with a 132-01 throw.

Also in the field events, Mikaela Fedor was third in the shot put, posting a 33-05.00 mark, while Nicole Umbenhauer also took home third place, heaving the discus 106-01 to earn that slot. Additionally, Fedor finished fourth in the discus (99-02), while Shay Gimbel was fifth (98-05).

Sebesta said that they had another good championship and will look to build on that performance one districts get under way later this week.
