Parkland boys win team track title; girls take second
The Parkland boys track and field team has been the best boys program in the Lehigh Valley Conference this year, finishing at 9-0 and winning the regular season and league-meet titles.
"The guys were just really loaded," said head coach Scott Levan. "This is the first year in over 29 years that we've coached that we've scored over 100 points on every team that we've faced. Usually there are one or two meets that are close. In the pole vault, we're taking [four of the top five places]. And there are five events like that, so the boys team is just tremendously strong and there's somebody in every event."
The league meet took place last Tuesday and Wednesday night at Whitehall High School.
In that pole vault event, Jack Walton took first place with a 13-09.00 mark. Walton was followed by Kevin Siroka, who was tied for second, Jeffrey Dax in fourth, and fifth place Jacob Kappes.
That was obviously not the only event where the Trojan boys saw success. In the 4x800 relay, the team of Steven Guetzlaff, Jeremy Motsko, Collin McConnell, and Grant Newman finished first with a time of 8:13.79.
Nolan Hay had a great showing at leagues, winning the triple jump, and long jump, and was part of the 4x100 relay team that came in third, along with Jarel Elder, Kareem Williams, and Najee Williams.
"Everybody here is here for a reason," Elder said. "Everyone is fast and does what they need to in each event to win. It's definitely good to place, and everyone is working hard."
Other winners included Ryan Szoldatits in the javelin throw, Motsko in the 800, and Legend Boyesen in the discus throw.
The girls track and field team also had a good showing, and finished tied for first with Emmaus at 9-0 for the regular season championship.
The girls did it more with numbers and depth.
"The girls really picked each other up on the team aspect," noted Levan. "There were some meets where we did well at sprinting and some where we didn't, but then our throwers would come through real big, and our distance runners and jumpers also came through for us in some meets. It was truly a team effort."
The Trojan girls came in second at leagues behind Emmaus, but there were some breakout performers.
Freshman Mikayla Stoudt, who finished first in the 1600 and 3200, took home the Jack Pressman Memorial award along with Emmaus' Hanna Brosky. Stoudt was also in the 4x800 relay, which placed second and included Nicole Albertson, Cassidy Newman, and Kayla Tracy.
Avery Semler placed second in the shot put. Alicia Lawler was third in the javelin throw. Oksana Wittbrodt was second in the discus and Albertson finished third in the 800.
Kelly Robertson won the triple jump with a mark of 37-11.00, which was a personal best for the senior who was battling a pulled quad muscle.
"I wasn't expecting to do anywhere near what I did tonight in the triple jump," Robertson said. "It was just a smooth jump and it worked out. Our track team has worked really hard all season, and we've done a really good job of training and we push ourselves. We're all like a family."
Now the Trojans track and field team looks to continue its success at the District 11 meet at Blue Mountain this week.
