Girls take down Bombers
Paige Kogelman, who went a perfect 4-for-4 against Palmerton in the Colonial League semifinals on Tuesday night at Patriots Park, was elated after a convincing 15-4 win.
"We did everything together," Kogelman said. "We started off tonight a little rocky. We have all been working hard all year."
Catty ended a 10-game winning streak for Palmerton and improved to 16-5 overall. The girls will meet division nemesis Pen Argyl, which got by Notre Dame of Green Pond 4-2 in the other semifinal game.
The Rough Riders smoked Palmerton (16-5) 10-0 in the Colonial League opener at Catty back on March 27, then were edged 1-0 in Palmerton on April 27. The Brown and White's offense has been there all year as they have scored 156 runs for the while giving up 83. Catasauqua has put double figures on opponents six times so far this season.
Catty's defense isn't always there, and it will have to be against Pen Argyl, which dropped the Roughs 5-2 as home earlier this season. Catty sneaked by the Lady Green Knights 3-2 at the Bill Kennedy Complex on March 30.
Championship game time at Pates Park is 7 p.m. Thursday, May 16.
The game was tied 2-2 after the first inning. Freshman phenom Hannah Edwards walked and stole second and senior Erika Lebron slapped a single down the third base line. Kogelman got the first of her four hits and drove in Edwards. Janae Matos got a fielder's choice and senior Jordan Dardas laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Kogelman for Catty's first two runs.
Palmerton's Sammie Doherty got a hit before Catty pitcher Lexi Ayache robbed Cassie Keiser of a hit on a liner back to the box. Janelle Tracy nicked Ayache for a hit and scored on an errant throw from the outfield. The Bombers got half of their hits in the first frame and only could get two more the rest of the contest off Ayache. Danielle Lilly played a solid shortstop for Catty.
Both teams scored again in the third inning. With one out Kogelman hit her second single of the game on an infield hit deep to short. Kogelman swiped second before a Matos fly out to center field. Jordan Dardas walked with two outs and designated player Shea O'Brien rocked a double to the fence for two RBIs. Ayache helped herself with a base hit that scored O'Brien and CHS went up 5-2.
Catty committed two errors in a row as Doherty got on base and then Keiser on a bobbled ball. The Bombers Abby Reimer walked and Steph Buck got an RBI on a sacrifice ground ball to cut the lead to 5-3.
But Big Brown batted around and 14 Rough Riders came to the plate in the top of the fifth to help put the game away.
Olivia Schlofer took one for the team as she was hit by a pitch. Hannah Edwards raced to first a bunt single before Lebron grounded out. Kogelman hit the first of her two doubles with a deep shot to the gap in between left and center. Matos torched an opposite field triple to score Kogelman. Dardas walked and O'Brien stuck a hit over the shortstop's head. Amarys Moten hit a bloop single to keep the merry-go-round going. Olivia Schlofer came up again and drilled a two-run hit and Edwards had a bunt single. Lebron walked and Kogelman cranked a three-run double.
Every Catty player in the lineup registered a positive stat. Ayache allowed only five hits for the Blue Bombers. O'Brien (2 runs scored) and Edwards went 2-for-3 (3 runs, 1 SB). Catty's battery of Ayache and Matos both went 2-for-4.
