Brader's football camp to feature LHS stars

With the gluttony of football camps available to high school players and the growing importance of position specific drills to football coaches at the higher levels, Jason Brader thinks he's filled a need.

Brader, the owner FASST Performance in Quakertown, is holding a camp on May 18 from 10am-3pm at the Bethlehem Steelers Youth Field off Schoenersville Rd. in Bethlehem.

The camp is open to football players from ninth grade up until incoming seniors. It's also specifically for skill position players on the offensive side of the ball including quarterback, wide receivers, tight ends and running backs.

"I want to bring a big feel college camp to the Lehigh Valley and focus on the athletes here," said Brader, a former Liberty and Muhlenberg running back. "We know a lot of kids go to recruiting camps in the summer, but don't really have the skills to excel. We want to work with them on the little details that can make them stand out in the crowd."

No potential recruiting will be done at Brader's camp, as he doesn't want players focusing on which college coaches or recruiters are there to eliminate the "show-off" factor. He wants players to focus on how to perform drills, how to present themselves and how to master the basics.

"You look at guys like Peyton Manning and he executes the basics better than anyone," Brader said. "Any top level athlete has a strong foundation in his technique for the basics and I think a lot of kids need to understand. They need to master the basics. I think people that understand that can take their game to the next level."

Brader will have a crew of former all-americans, pro athletes, college coaches and hall of fame college players at his disposal. Former Liberty standouts, Dan Persa (ex-Northwestern QB), Jarrod West (current Syracuse wide receiver) and Devin Street (current University of Pittsburgh wide receiver) will all be present.

Street is rated as one of the top six wide receivers in college football next season and could find himself in consideration to become a first-round NFL prospect.

Having individuals that have been at the top and who are striving to reach their peak only reemphasizes Brader's goal for the camp.

"We want all the players in the camp to fine tune their skills," he said. "Whether it's for a specific college camp they're going to attend or just for their own development as a player. Everyone coming is going to focus on their technique. Having guys like Dan, Jarrod and Devin also shows them what hard work can do. They're examples of how far you can go if you focus on the basics and if you have the right mindset."
