Win and they're in
Throughout the year, Catasauqua's baseball team has had as many twists and turns to its season as a high-speed, multi-looped roller coaster.
However, a win Wednesday afternoon easily could have brought the Roughies back to solid ground.
Entering its final two games of the regular season, Catty needed to win both contests to ensure themselves a wild card spot in the upcoming Colonial League playoffs, a visit they would take for the first time in four seasons.
They took the first step Monday night when they pounded out a 14-5 victory at Northern Lehigh in which Zac Edwards drove in three runs and combined with Brandon Purrone on a six-hitter. Derrick Bond and Randall Pacchioli each drove in two runs apiece in the victory.
The win left the Roughies with an overall 11-8 mark, and they earlier clinched a district playoff berth. They faced Northwestern Wednesday afternoon in the season finale, after Press deadlines, as the Roughies had hoped to avenge a weather-shortened, 2-1 defeat April 10. Catty entered its final game winning six of its last 10 contests.
Head coach Steve Bradley would welcome the opportunity to play for the CL crown, but he is stratified with his team's performance as they will head toward the postseason.
"We had a great stretch a couple of weeks ago when we clinched a playoff spot and had a 4-0 week," said Bradley. "This past week, we had a couple of wild games in which we lost due to a bad call on what should have been an infield fly rule. We also went to Pius on the same day we had spirit day at school, and the guys were awake and active since five in the morning. There were players literally asleep on the bus ride there, but we woke up in time and squeaked by them.
"We had a good showing against Northern Lehigh, and we had hoped for a good one against Northwestern. They (Northwestern) beat us in a shortened game earlier."
Bradley has credited his regular rotation of Edwards, Zac Bradley, Jeff Trexler, Tyler Correll, and Zach Stopay. He also has been pleased with the addition of senior Casey Simmons, who recently returned to the squad and has been a valuable reliever in some key spots. Simmons has been slated to be the Roughies' primary catcher, but his playing time has been reduced due to the emergence of Pacchioli, who has been among the team's leading hitters all season.
"Casey (Simmons) has done a nice job for us lately," said Bradley. "He has come into some big situations for us and managed to shut the other team down. It's great to have another arm around, and Casey has been through this before."
Whatever the outcome, Bradley is optimistic his club can weather any potential storm that may come their way in the next few weeks.
"We have gained confidence very week," said Zac Bradley, who tossed a no-hitter earlier this season and has been an anchor on the staff. "We made a run late last season and we were hurt with a slow start.
"We've been through the league and know what to expect. We don't want to come up short."
"These guys have grown in many ways throughout the season," echoed his father. "They know what is at stake and know how to attack this situation. It is in their hands right now."
