Whitehall in LVC playoff for first time
With prom season officially here, the Whitehall baseball team has an engagement later this month that could see them getting some early dance lessons.
While it remains to be seen whether or not they'll be celebrating a Lehigh Valley Conference championship - which may include a few impromptu moves on the diamond - the mere fact that they're earned a spot is an historic feat for the Whitehall baseball program. It marks the first time a team has qualified for the LVC playoffs since the league's inception.
Head coach Shaun O'Boyle who has been with the program for 10 years, first as an assistant and now its skipper, understands the importance of this moment. This team has compiled a 17-1 record, its lone blemish a 6-5 loss to Liberty High School.
"This is something we talked about at the beginning of the year," said O'Boyle. "It's always one of our goals. These kids did that."
Whitehall will be joined by Liberty, Parkland and Emmaus in the championships. While the stage is set, the match-ups are still to be determined. With the Zephs, Trojans, and Green Hornets having just one league loss, the seeding won't be finalized until the very last game when Parkland and Whitehall meet on Thursday.
O'Boyle said that there's a number of variations that could shake out, but Whitehall remains in the driver's seat for the top spot if they win their final game against the Trojans. While a first seed may be a feather in their cap, O'Boyle was quick to point out that no matter where they're slotted, every team in the championships is a tough customer.
"They're all really good teams," he said.
Getting into the playoffs required a number of elements coming together, and their recent game against Northampton High School underscored a very important aspect of their success.
They took an early lead, staking starting pitcher Jake Wloczewski to a 2-0 lead. That was followed by a four-run fifth that put them comfortably ahead of their cross-river foes. But the Kids rallied in their half of the fifth, taking advantage of some hits combined with some bad hops, that led to three runs, closing the gap to three.
It also gave the Kids some momentum, said O'Boyle, a dangerous component that could help boost their confidence and get them in position to take the lead.
However, the Zephs quickly doused any hopes the Kids had of building on that momentum since they were unable to shut the door on Whitehall in the top of the sixth. Wloczewski led off with a single. Jeff Charles followed with another single, then came home on Tyler Bridgwood's bases-clearing double. Zach Delp kept the hit parade going, singling to advance Bridgwood who scored on Ryan Bonshak's single.
The ability to answer right back with three runs of their own played a major factor in the win, said O'Boyle.
"That's huge," O'Boyle said. "It's what we talk about…it shows what you're made of when you're down."
O'Boyle said that as soon as the inning ended they talked about getting those runs right back, something they were able to do which is one reason why they sit atop the North Division of the LVC.
"When you can put a team down, more than they were, that's really big," said O'Boyle.
Wloczewski allowed four hits in his five innings of work. O'Boyle said that he walked just one, while mixing his pitches to keep the Kids off balance. He was relieved by Jacob Meyers who finished the game for the Zephs.
Wloczewski also brought a big stick to the game, going 2-4 with an RBI. Ryan Bonshak was 3-4 with an RBI, while Delp was 2-3 with two runs batted in, and Bridgwood was 2-4 with an RBI.
