Girls fall to EHS, PHS
The Zephyr girls track team had some strong performances when they met Emmaus and Parkland High Schools last week, but it wasn't enough to overtake them in the final stretch.
The girls dropped the two meets by identical scores, losing 90-60 to their Lehigh Valley Conference rivals.
While it was a tough way to close out the season, head coach Jim Sebesta said that it was a valiant effort considering both the Trojans and Green Hornets were undefeated in Lehigh Valley Conference competition.
"The meet went well," said Sebesta. "I think we could have scored more, but we pulled some girls back from some events with leagues coming up."
Sprinter Decontee Krayee continued to capture firsts, winning the 100 meters against the Trojans and Green Hornets with a 13.1 mark. She also placed second in the 200, and helped the 4x100 relay team nail down second.
Sebesta said that Krayee has been "the picture of consistency" this season. She has been among the top sprinters in the league and is always capable of grabbing points in every race she enters.
With the Zephs having established a formidable track record among their girl sprinters the last few seasons (Danielle Smith and Kelsey Gregory), Sebesta indicated that there has been no appreciable drop off with Krayee and Arianie Pizarro in the blocks.
"They have been good all year," he said.
In the 400, Angela Stella finished second, posting a 1:00.9 mark, while LeAnna Cruz was second in the 800, crossing the line in 2:27.1.
The girls also were able to grab some points in the jumps as Ivanna Jones took first in the high jump with a 4-11 flight over the bar. Jillian Kreglow also collected some points in the high jump. finishing second in the event with a 4-09 mark.
This is another area where the Zephyrs are emerging with Jones and Kreglow improving with every meet. They have consistently made progress and will now look to replicate that in the postseason.
In the hurdles, Sierra Dreisbach, came in third, hitting the tape in 51.5. 4.
Once again, they proved strong in the throws, with Nicole Umbenhauer and Mikaela Fedor taking first in the three events. Umbenhauer won the discus with a 102-8 throw, then launched the javelin 101-10 for first in that event. Fedor's mark of 35-07.50 was tops in the shot, while Shay Gimbel was able to secure second in the discus, and Fedor taking third, completing the sweep.
Sebesta said that Umbenhauer also falls into that picture of consistency group, noting that the senior "scores almost every meet in all the throws." She's also added the high jump to her repertoire this season, making her a valuable cog in the line-up.
The girls now look to the postseason as the league championships loom. Sebesta said it's the time he wants his athletes to start peaking as they journey toward the ultimate prize at the state championships in Shippensburg.
