Boys survive fast Nolehi start

Catasauqua survived an early scare from Northern Lehigh before pulling away to win 14-5 Monday night at Bryfogle Park during a dual senior night celebration.

Catty, now 9-6, will take on Northwestern, also 9-6, Wednesday (after Press deadlines) with the winner becoming the North Division champion and advancing to the Colonial League playoffs next Tuesday, May 14. The loser could potentially be tied for the final wildcard spot depending on Notre Dame's (9-6) game with Wilson.

The Roughs trailed 4-1 after the first inning but scored 13 runs between the third and fifth frames.

Several hitters had big days for Catty. Zac Edwards was 3-for-5 with a double and three RBIs and three runs scored. Derrick Bond was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and four runs scored. Randall Pacchioli went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs while Brandon Purrone was 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI.

Catty High school traveled to the Slate Belt for a game under the lights in Bangor, and the Slaters prevailed 6-2.

Catty's leadoff batter and number-two batter got on base eight straight times, but Catty couldn't always take advantage. Zach Stopay was 3-for-3 with a walk and a run scored and Zac Edwards was 2-for-2 with two walks and an RBI.

In the third inning Catty had three consecutive hits, but did not score. TC Corell singled to right, Zach Stopay singled up the middle and Edwards followed with a single to right field, but Bangor's right fielder gunned down Correll at the plate.

Meanwhile, the Slaters scored three times in the fourth. With the bases loaded, Catty attempted a pickoff play at first, but a balk was called on Catty pitcher Jeff Trexler which forced in the first run. Two more runs scored on an error.

Catty got on the board in the sixth inning when Zach Stopay beat out an infield hit. Edwards then walked and both runners moved up on a balk. Zach Stopay scored on a ground out.

Bangor added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on two misplayed balls.

Catty did not quit, despite trailing 6-1. Jacob Stopay, Trexler and Zach Stopay all walked to load the bases for Catty in the top of the 7. Edwards drilled a single to center scoring Jacob Stopay from third to cut it to 6-2 but that was all Catty could force home.

Edwards drove in a run along with junior Brandon Purrone.

In Roseto last Friday Catty jumped out to a 5-0 lead, fell behind 7-5, then rallied for a 8-7 victory. The Roughies almost looked past Pius X, which had something to prove with their 4-9 mark a year after winning the District 11 Class A crown last year. Five sophomores comprise the Royals starting lineup.

Pius picked up one run in the bottom of the second.

Zack Bradley started the game for Catty on the mound. The junior pitcher K'd six Royals. Bradley got into some trouble with three walks. Senior hurler Casey Simmons got the win in relief. Simmons sat down four Royal hitters with strikeouts and no walks.

The Royals Aaron Savelli was nailed for the loss. Savelli put down five Roughie batters with three walks.

Multiple hit Roughies were Zach Stopay, Zac Edwards, Carlos Perez, who doubled, and Jacob Stopay. Junior Brandon Purrone also roped a double.
