Boys beat EHS
The Zephyr boys track team split their engagements with the Trojans and the Green Hornets last week, relying on a jet burst from the sprints to get the one win.
The loss came at the hands of Parkland High School who tripped up the Zephs, winning 105-45. That same meet they dealt Emmaus High School a blow, bolting to a 88-62 win.
Sprinter John Johnson helped to lay the foundation for the victory against Emmaus High School, taking first in the 200 meters with a 23.2 mark, and second in the 100 (11.3). His sprinting prowess was further cemented as part of the winning 4x100 relay team which also featured James Wah, Nick Shafnisky and Kyleem Harrison (43.3).
Head coach Jim Sebesta said that Johnson has been a reliable performer every time he steps onto the track, earning valuable points for the Zephs at every opportunity.
"JJ has provided us with great effort all season, in the 100, the 200 and the 4x100 [relay]," said Sebesta.
Sebesta said that Johnson is also adding another event to his resumé as he'll now be high jumping in addition to the sprints.
"I'm hoping for good things from him the next two weeks," said Sebesta.
While Johnson achieved some individual success, the 4x100 relay team in which he was a member broke the school record in the meet, said Sebesta. They finished the race in 43.3.
Johnson's effort was followed by the solid performance by Kurt Koehler who took second in the 400, crossing the line in 53.2.
In the hurdles, Harrison kept up his rigorous pace, sharing time between the sprint relays, the jumps, and the 110 meter hurdles, placing second with a 16.3 mark. He was also third in the long jump, sticking a 20-04 leap.
The high jump was won by J C Falcon, taking first with a 6-03 mark. Falcon continues to impress, establishing himself as one of the top leapers in the Lehigh Valley Conference.
Sebesta said that Falcon's contribution has been invaluable, lending his talent to the relays as well as the high jump which has aided their totals this season.
"JC Falcon all year has been a big part of our 4x400 and 4x800 teams, and is also one of the top high jumpers in the valley," said Sebesta. "We hope to back him off a little so he can be fresh the next two weeks for the high jump."
The throwers were highlighted by Jake Wygant who was first in the shot put with a 48-05.25 toss. Also registering a good throw was Kenneth Christine-Mann who placed second in discus with a 130-02 mark. Finally, Nick Nejad took third in the javelin with a 148-06 heave.
Sebesta said that Wygant and Christine-Mann both had personal bests in the meet, underscoring their contributions this year at every turn. Sebesta now hopes his throwers will "step up this week at leagues."
