Borough hall centennial event planned

The North Catasauqua Betterment Committee is beginning to plan a birthday party for the borough's municipal building.

Located at 1066 Fourth St., borough hall was originally an elementary school, built in 1913.

Borough Council President Joseph Keglovits presented the idea, on behalf of the betterment committee, at the April 23 borough council meeting.

"It will be nothing elaborate," he said. "Just something to let people know the building is 100 years old."

Keglovits said the committee will contact residents who attended school there, inviting them to attend an open house as special guests.

He proposed a performance by the community We Sing chorus as part of the festivities as well.

Councilman Michael Seng said he has procured an American flag that flew over the capital building for the occasion.

The new school building housed grades 1-8 for the North Catasauqua School District and later, when Catasauqua and North Catasauqua school districts merged, grades 1-6 for the Catasauqua Area School District.

The building was purchased by the borough in 1975, and moved its municipal offices there the following year.

It currently includes offices for the police department and the borough, council chambers, an all-purpose meeting room and fire department headquarters.

The second floor is not in active use.
