Biviano, Roughies looking to place at Colonial League meet

With his track season in the twilight of his high school career, Justin Biviano sometimes wishes he had two more years of varsity experience left.

It was two years ago as a sophomore that Biviano took the initiative to try out for the team. During his junior and now senior year, he soon realized that he made the right choice.

For the second consecutive year, Biviano will participate in the discus competition during the Colonial League track meet that began Tuesday afternoon and concluded the following day. Biviano was among a core of Roughies that participated.

Anthony Brinkley was the top seed overall in the 1,600 and second in the 3,200. Ra'Von Burton was seeded third overall in the 100, and the boys' 400 relay team was on the heels of top-seeded Palmerton.

Even though Biviano might be viewed as a long shot to take a top three spot at the league meet, he is still content to finish the season in his best possible way. Earlier during the regular season, he threw a personal best of 119 feet, topping his old mark of 114.

Whatever the case, it has been a rewarding two seasons, and four years overall for the seniors who has also made his mark on the football field and basketball court in Catty.

"I always thought about it when I was younger, and a couple of my friends convinced me to give it a try," noted Biviano, who also threw shot put and javelin. "From the beginning, it was a good fit for me.

"I enjoy working out and this also kept me in shape for the other sports. I realized how much work went into throwing, and I knew I had to work on it. But I dedicated myself and did whatever I could to help us win in the events."

This season, Biviano was among a four-man unit along with Isaiah Berry, Jarrid Strong, and Jared Stephen, who all took part in all three throwing events. Biviano credited his success to throwing coach Frank Schlofer, who has been working with him since he began.

"He (Schlofer) has been with me from the start," said the soft-spoken Biviano. "He has helped me with my form, and has always done his best to motivate me. He has really kept me focused and helped get the best out of me."

Head coach Glenn Reightler has appreciated both his coach and player's contributions.

"Frank (Schlofer) does a great job with the throwers for us," he said. "Justin has been a natural with us since he started. He has worked hard to improve in all areas and he's had a nice year for us."

Next fall, Biviano will matriculate at Bloomsburg University where he plans to pursue a degree in early childhood education.
