LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

LVC wildcard race heating up

It's coming down to crunch time in the Lehigh Valley Conference volleyball season and the wildcard spot for the LVC playoffs is a hot item. Both Whitehall and Northampton are fighting for that final spot, as well as Bethlehem Catholic, as teams enter their final four games of league play into the next week.

Northampton (11-3, 6-3), Whitehall (6-5, 6-3) and Bethlehem Catholic (7-3, 6-3) all share identical league records at the moment, but their fates will come into focus as key matchups take place.

Northampton takes on East division leader Liberty (10-2, 8-1) tonight in a match that the Kids need to win in order to keep pace.

Their road continues against Whitehall and Parkland (10-1, 9-1) next week to give them the toughest ending to regular season.

"With playing two divisional leaders and a wildcard contender, we have the toughest remaining schedule in the league hands down," said Kids' head coach Doug Fehnel. "The team is not looking ahead to what happens if we win or lose, or what the other teams are doing, they are taking one game at a time and playing each match like its their last. Every game is big from here out."

Northampton has already lost to Whitehall this year, but Becahi, which could come into play if tiebreakers factor into the scenario.

Whitehall head coach George Cowitch knows nothing is cemented yet, as his team takes on Allen tonight before wrapping up league play in the division.

"Their is a chance, we need Beca to lose once, and we have to win out, which is a possibility," said Cowitch of Whitehall slipping into the LVC wildcard. "We are focusing on limiting our mistakes in important points in the match. We also are working on tightening up the technical part of the game."

Bethlehem Catholic's toughest match remaining is May 6 against Liberty, as the Hurricanes already knocked off the Hawks this year. Each team can't afford to lose any more matches this year if they want to grab an LVC spot.
