Several people reported becoming ill after a package was discovered around 9:30 a.m. April 26 at a medical office building at 3080 Hamilton Blvd., South Whitehall Township.
According to South Whitehall Township Police Sgt. Michael A. Sorrentino, the initial report was the package emitted an odor and may have caused a non-specific medical irritation to several office personnel.
Sorrentino said the package was removed from the office by staff prior to arrival of emergency service providers.
The package and medical complaints prompted the response of additional specialty personnel and equipment.
During the course of the investigation, emergency responders monitored several individuals who reported physical irritation or discomfort from possible exposure.
As a precaution, Sorrentino said, several individuals who reported irritation or discomfort were decontaminated at the scene and transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, for further medical evaluation.
The medical office where the package was located remained closed for additional time as responders re-evaluated the area to ensure it was safe for staff and patients to return.
The package, later determined to be an envelope from a medical company that conducts frequent business with the medical office, was checked for known hazardous substances and found to be clear of any hazards.
The building and medical office were determined to be clear and safe for the return of staff and visitors, Sorrentino said.
Cetronia and Woodlawn fire departments, Cetronia Ambulance Corps, South Whitehall Township Fire Police and Emergency Management crews, Lehigh County Special Operations Team, Lehigh Valley Hospital Security and Special Operations Unit also responded to the scene.
