Contreras always keeps busy, but it's academics first

With her track and high school athletic career possibly ending this week, Catasauqua's Selena Contreras has come full circle.

Contreras, a senior, had thrown discus, shot and javelin and has also ran the 4 X 800 relay for the Roughies' track program this spring and she was awaiting to see if her career could continue at districts in a few weeks. Whether or not it does, Contreras has made the most of her time wearing the brown and white.

Along with track, Contreras has been a member of the school's field hockey and basketball programs and has been involved in an array of other school-related activities as student council, SADD, debate, power of 10, peer mentalist, student representative on the school board, editor on the school yearbook and a four-year letter winner on Varsity C, likely her proudest accomplishments.

"It is probably the best thing I can do," she said of her rigorous schedule. "I like to keep busy, but academics always comes first. I started with track because I was looking for a sport to play in the spring and my older brother Andrew was involved.

"Once I got involved (in track), I knew it was a good fit from the start. I had played softball, so I knew the throwing would come naturally."

Contreras has worked diligently on improving her throwing in the discus, in which she recently set a personal best throw of 84 feet. At districts last year, she placed 16th in the discus. She credited assistant coach Frank Schlofer with her development through the years.

"Selena (Contreras) has worked really hard since her freshman year," said head coach Glenn Reightler. "She (Contreras) improved her strength and her technique. But we knew she could help us a freshman, and she has grown ever since.

"She has really helped develop our overall girls' program."

Next year, Contreras will enter Cedar Crest College where she will begin working toward a degree in biology and forensic science.

"Ever since I took a Biology II course, I have been interested in both fields," she said. "It looks like it will be fun doing some lab work and then trying to solve a detective case with forensics. It really interests me."

Contreras would like to continue her track career; however, Cedar Crest does not have a program.

"I may try and play field hockey," she said. "If not, I may try out for Moravian's (College) track team. I have to see what happens."

Whatever happens, Contreras definitely has enjoyed the ride with the Roughies.

"I really feel like I have done what I could," noted Contreras. "This was my last season and probably my best season because they were so many memorable things. I'm glad I was able to do as many things as I did for the teams, and also realize what I was capable of doing both in school and with sports."

Next year, Contreras is likely to begin the circle all over again.
