Catty beats Knights in bottom of seventh

After an exciting 3-2 win over Pen Argyl in the bottom of the seventh, Catasauqua High School head coach Bobby Thomas was excited.

"This was huge. A bunch of teams are in the running for the Colonial League playoffs. At least six or seven," Thomas said.

Catty freshman Hannah Edwards (4-for-4) began the seveth with her fourth hit of the game. Erika Lebron followed and roped a double that scored Edwards to tie the game at 2-2. Paige Kogelman, who went 3-for-4 on the day, and was using the whole field all game long, dropped in an opposite field hit to right which scored Lebron for the game-winner.

Catty players realize that Pen Argyl and Palmerton on Wednesday, after Press deadlines, loomed big on the horizon. Catty will be sitting pretty if it can manage to win out.

Lexi Ayache allowed just two hits at home against Pen Argyl. But, the Green Knights got to Catty in the top of the third inning for an early lead. Laura Zanette got a hit and was forced out at second base which left Alyssa Weaver standing on first base with a fielder's choice. Pitcher Emilly Shull helped herself out with a two-run homer.

Ayache whiffed clean-up hitter Sam Firestone to get out of the inning and then she held the Lady Knights hitless the rest of the game, getting eight strikeouts.

Catty got one back in the bottom of the fourth to cut it to 2-1. Kogelman stroked a single to opposite field to start the inning. Catcher Janae Matos had a hit that moved Kogelman and Jordan Dardas laid down a nice sacrifice bunt. Shea O'Brien sent a ball to the outfield for a sacrifice fly RBI.

The freshman Edwards swiped three bases but was thrown out for the first time stealing this year. Kogelman roped a triple to opposite field in Catty's first at bat.

Smull struck out seven while walking just one and had both of the Knights hits.

Edwards said, "Smull is known for her outside pitches and threw inside at me all day. Her infielders did a shift on me so I just slapped the ball past them. We control our own destiny."
