Hornets spike Trojans once again
The last time the Emmaus and Parkland boys volleyball programs met, the Green Hornets edged the Trojans in a five-game series by a 3-2 score, and were crowned 2012 District 11 champions.
Last Thursday night it was much of the same as Emmaus (8-1 overall, 6-1 LVC) battled back from down two games to one, to defeat previously unbeaten Parkland (8-1 overall, 7-1 LVC) 3-2 at Parkland High School.
The official final scores were 25-21, 16-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-12. The win continues a streak of consecutive wins over the Trojans, who have not beaten Emmaus since 2010, according to Parkland head coach Scott Trumbauer.
"It was a classic Parkland-Emmaus match," Trumbauer said. "I expected something good to come out of it in the end, in terms of our overall play. But we have to take the negative and hopefully turn it into something positive. It's not the end of the season, and there will be more opportunities towards the end of the season. We'll see how things go."
The loss was the first of the season for the Trojans, after winning seven straight conference games overall. Trumbauer wants his team to remember this, but to move forward with much still to play for.
"I said to them, 'the longer you keep your heads down, the more it's going to hurt,'" noted Trumbauer. "'If you come back to practice tomorrow with your head down, we're going to play poorly.'"
Parkland led 16-12 in the first game, but Emmaus closed out the game by scoring 13 of the final 17 points. The Trojans took full control over the next two games and used two well-placed kills to win games two and three, the latter by Michael Lewis finding an open spot on the court to drill home the winner.
After leading game four by a score of 3-0, it looked as if the Trojans would finish off the Green Hornets in four games, but Emmaus bounced back to take the lead, and never look back.
In the decisive game 5, the score was tied twice at 7-7 and 11-11. Collin Stanton hit the winner nine points later.
"The kids wanted this one," Trumbauer added after the Trojans lost in the final last year. "Anytime you can beat Emmaus is good. We haven't beaten them since 2010, which doesn't sound like a while, but every year we are both in playoffs and see each other more than the one regular season game. The kids remember that, and they play club ball with a lot of them. It's a little rivalry that comes from that. We just didn't execute as well as we could've."
