SALISBURY TOWNSHIP SCHOOL DISTRICT

The Salisbury Township School Board honored the Salisbury High School boys swimming and diving team at their April 17 meeting.

In March, the swimmers and divers won the first team state title in the school's history, winning the PIAA 2A State Championship by a single point in the final relay.

"It was like a movie," Salisbury Athletic Director Monica Deeb said.

The board presented the team with certificates and served them with a "Congratulations Salisbury Boys Swimming/ Diving Team State Champions" cake.

"Since coming to Salisbury, I've been privileged to experience a lot of firsts, and I joke about that with the board, but there's some great firsts that have occurred and I am so proud to be the superintendent of Salisbury at a time when [the swimming and diving team] won the state championship," Superintendent Michael Roth said.

First year head coach Jason Reinhard said he was blessed with a wonderful group.

"The kids did all the hard work," Reinhard said. "Every day I demanded a lot from them and they met that challenge. I'm so proud of them."

Deeb also thanked the swimmers' parents.

"I can't even begin to talk about the support they give the program," Deeb said. "They run the concession stand, they do the holiday gift card fundraiser, they do everything. They are very generous with their time, very generous to the school district and without them this wouldn't have happened."

Dustan Raines from the office of State Rep. Justin Simmons, R-131st, presented the team with two citations, one for the 400 meter freestyle relay team, which sealed Salisbury's victory and another presented to the whole team for winning the state championship.

Reinhard said it was teamwork that helped them win the title.

"We had 17 guys on the team, 10 of them at states and nine out of 10 scored points," Reinhard said. "It was a real team effort, not just four or five guys. They earned it."

In other business, the board accepted the following resignations due to retirement: Debra Roeding, an instructional support teacher at Harry S Truman Elementary School effective at the end of the work day June 11; Carol Grejda, a 12-month secretary at Harry S Truman Elementary School effective at the end of the work day Oct. 1; and Laurie Ehrlacher, a part-time 4 hours a day instructional assistant at Western Salisbury Elementary School effective at the end of the work day June 11.

Barbara Jaindl, library media teacher at Western Salisbury Elementary School and Salisbury Middle School, was approved for a FMLA leave for up to 60 days effective March 18 through April 30.

Victor DeOliveira was approved as the assistant varsity track coach for the 2012-2013 school term, Mark Kappes was approved as the spring strength coach for the 2012-2013 school term, Louis Bottitta was approved as a volunteer assistant boys tennis coach for the 2012-2013 school term without pay and/or benefits and Susan Young was approved as a volunteer junior varsity softball coach for the 2012-2013 school term without pay and/or benefits.
