Girls hope to turn it around
As the 2013 season is unfolding, the Whitehall softball team is still trying to get some solid footing and maintain some consistency to help them steer a course toward the postseason.
They've shown the ability to put together some wins as evidenced by their victories over Catasauqua and Easton Area High Schools last week, but then they dip into another valley, losing to Bethlehem Catholic and Emmaus their last two games to fall to 3-7 on the season.
Head coach Alexis Berg-Townsend said at the outset that the team had talent and experience, but would have to combine those attributes with consistency to realize their potential. Right now they haven't been able to get that consistent performance and it's led to a rollercoaster season thus far.
"The season thus far has been a tough one," said Berg-Townsend. "We have had some ups and we have definitely had our downs. As I stated in the beginning of the season, consistency needed to be there. We have not found that consistency yet. The season is not over but this team needs to look at the remaining part of the season with a sense of urgency. We can do it, its a matter of when and hopefully now."
The Zephs have the components to get back on track. Andrea Emery has been a two-year starter on the hill and knows what it takes to win in the Lehigh Valley Conference. Battery mate Regan Bortz is another seasoned vet who can lift a team with the powerful swing of her bat. Braylynn Reimer has been a fixture at first the last few years and is another strong bat in their line-up as well. Additionally, all-stars Madison Kelly and Lauren Mortimer are still top tier players who can help guide them through these tough times.
Tuesday's game saw them fall to the Green Hornets, 3-2. The Zephs got on the board early, capitalizing on Mortimer's round tripper to take a 2-0 lead. It stayed that way until the fifth when Emmaus tied it with a two-spot, setting the stage for their home sixth when they took they scored the go-ahead run that led to the eventual victory.
The loss to the Golden Hawks, who many regard as the team to beat in the Lehigh Valley Conference, illustrated that inconsistency, playing well for a large portion of the game until the Hawks broke it open in the fourth when they erupted for four runs. Up to that point, the game was tied 1-1, with both teams scoring in the first. They also had trouble figuring out pitcher Joelle Morey who only allowed one hit in the complete game victory.
In their 8-6 win over the Red Rovers, the Zephs withstood a seventh inning surge to nail down the victory. Easton scored all their runs in the final three frames, including three in the top of the seventh to make that charge. However, Emery made sure the comeback fizzled as she worked her way out of the inning to seal the win.
The win was highlighted by a number of performances, notably Kelly who went 2 for 3, including a tripe and two RBIs. Also getting into the swing of things was Kelly Spanitz who also was 2 for 3 at the plate, including an RBI, while Mortimer was 1 for 3 with a home run and a run batted in for the winning Zephs.
