Breinigsville woman charged with theft of charity monies
A Breinigsville woman has been charged with theft and other offenses for allegedly stealing $23,580 from an annual event to raise funds for the Ride for Adam.
According to the office of Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin, Charmaine Lynn Mc-Kelvey, 43, of 8657 Breinigsville Road, Upper Macungie, is charged with theft by unlawful taking or disposition, receiving stolen property and theft by failure to make required disposition of funds, all third-degree felonies.
According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by South Whitehall Township police, they began an investigation in January into the theft or misappropriation of funds from the Race for Adam Foundation, a nonprofit corporation that assists families with funding treatment and research of Niemann-Pick Type C, a neuromuscular degenerative disease.
The funds were obtained through a motorcycle raffle that took place Aug. 25, 2012, during an annual event at the Schnecksville Community Fire Company.
McKelvey, president of American Legion Riders Chapter No. 16, was the organizer of the raffle, which netted ticket sales of $23,980.
Police determined only four raffle winners received their prizes – $250 in cash, $100 in cash, $50 in cash and a $25 gift card donated from Keystone Harley Davidson, Parryville.
Police and the foundation attempted to identify the grand prize winner, whose name has not been released, even though the foundation made repeated requests to McKelvey.
The grand prize was a 2012 custom-painted Harley Davidson Switchback motorcycle, which was never claimed or awarded.
Five other winners also did not receive their prizes in the total amount of $175 – three $25 gift cards for Keystone Harley Davidson, and two cash prizes of $50 each.
Police served search warrants on several financial institutions and conducted numerous interviews to locate the money allegedly collected and promised to the Race for Adam Foundation by McKelvey.
