Newcomers power baseball win
Tuesday's game against Northampton marked Alex Flynn's pitching debut at the varsity level for Parkland.
And by judging his performance on the mound, you wouldn't even know it.
After replacing starter Rhett Jacoby - who went 2 1/3 innings and gave up four runs on nine hits - Flynn pitched 3 2/3 innings of one-hit baseball that helped the Trojans respond from a four-run third inning for the Konkrete Kids, and come away with the 7-4 victory.
The win keeps the Trojans undefeated early on with a 3-0 record.
"He's a mentally tough kid," said head coach Tony Galucy of Flynn. "He mixes pitches up real well, and I think that was the difference with him. After our first pitcher was relying on his fastball a little bit, he came in and was able to get his curveball over for strikes.
"When he came into the game, we only gave up one the rest of the way. That's huge."
Momentum seemed to shift to the Konkrete Kids' side after taking that 4-3 lead in the third. The Trojans, though, remained patient and responded immediately.
It was Brad Vasilik who had a large hand in that response.
Zack Merkle first scored on a wild pitch after reaching base on an error to begin the inning. And four batters later, Vasilik notched his third hit of the game that scored Adam Schneck, giving the Trojans a 5-4 lead they would never squander.
"I was just trying to have some fun, and get the team up a little bit and give them the lead," said Vasilik. "I felt like we needed those runs to get us back on top."
"We said don't panic," said Galucy. "It was only the third inning; it felt like it was the seventh inning for how long it was going."
The Trojans led 3-0 after two innings. Vasilik - who led off the first inning with a single to left field and advanced to second on a throwing error - scored on the next plate appearance when Damin Muth blasted a double into right field. Muth then scored two batters later off a Tyler Graff single to left field.
After a walk to Aidan Flynn to start the second, Vasilik squeezed another single down the left field line to bring home Flynn, making it 3-0 Trojans.
Vasilik finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
"Our team is pretty good," said Vasilik. "We have a lot of underclassmen and a lot of good players left from last year. I feel we have the pitching to go pretty far."
The Trojans got two insurance runs in the sixth inning; Chris Rabasco and Graff both scored to make it 7-4. Those runs proved to be significant too, as Northampton threatened with two runners on base and one out in the seventh, despite failing to bring either across home.
"That last inning would've been a little bit more hairy if we didn't score those runs," said Galucy. "When you get a two-out hit like that, to get a three-run lead in the last inning, it helped."
The Trojans will look to continue their hot streak on Thursday when they host Freedom. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
