Zoro, Northampton Police Department's K-9, has been busy the past few weeks.
Along with Patrol Officer John Mullner, the dog has responded to calls involving fights and disturbances and performed routine assignments such as security checks and visits to local schools.
Mayor Thomas Reenock in a report to borough council said Zoro was instrumental in narcotic searches in an area near Northampton Area High School, another unnamed borough school, a tractor-trailer on Routes 22 and 145 and a residence in the 1700 block of Main Street.
Zoro also assisted in serving an arrest warrant in the 900 block of Main Street and took part in searching an area near Eighth Street and Line Alley where a shot was fired. The dog further assisted Mullner in executing a search warrant for narcotics in the 2300 block of Main Street.
Mullner and Zoro were also summoned to Coplay for a report of a burglary in progress and to 21st and Canal streets and another call in the 2000 block of Center Street.
The K-9 Unit was also active with the arrests made in the 1600 block of Railroad Street and the 800 block of Main Street. He and Mullner also responded to a call of a suspicious person lurking near the Roxy Theatre in the 2000 block of Main Street.
In most instances, Zoro's presence is enough to deter someone from breaking the law.
Zoro and Mullner continue their training with other area K-9 Units. A training event recently took place in the former vo-tech building on the Northampton Area School District campus.
