FEMA funding to replace pump station

The Borough of Northampton will receive federal dollars to replace equipment damaged in the 2011 flood.

At Thursday's meeting of borough council, Assistant to the Borough Manager LeRoy Brobst said he has been notified the borough will be receiving FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Area) funding to replace the pump station. Councilman Anthony "Tony" Pristash said the borough expects to receive $21,291.

"Much of this was spent at the Stewart Street pump station," Pristash said.

In other business, Councilman Anthony Lopsonzski Jr., building, land and recreation chairman, reported the Northampton Recreation Center will hold its final two dances for the season. They are scheduled for April 6 for seventh- and eighth-grade youth and May 4 for fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade children. The chaperoned dances begin at 6:30 p.m. and conclude at 9 p.m. at the center on Lerchenmiller Drive.

The fire department's annual Spring Thaw Rendezvous will again be held at the municipal park, off Smith Lane and Lerchenmiller Drive. The event, which attracts hundreds of bike riders and their motorcycles, will take place on Saturday, May 4. The rain date is Sunday, May 5.

"It should be noted that a crew of the public works department has painted council President John Yurish's office, along with the conference room," Borough Manager Gene Zarayko said.

In another development, public works personnel began construction of a new, larger salt shed.

"Once the new shed is complete, the salt will be transferred to the new shed and the old shed will be refurbished," Councilman Keith Piescienski reported.
