THEATER REVIEW 'Chocolate' delight at DeSales' Act 3
It doesn't pay to be a bad kid as spoiled Golden Ticket winners find out in the Act 3 Children's Theatre Company of DeSales University's production of Richard R. George's adaptation of Roald Dahl's "Charlie & The Chocolate Factory."
The show, 10 a.m. Thursdays and one Tuesday through May 2, Schubert Theatre, Labuda Center for the Performing Arts, DeSales University, and ably directed by Emiley Kiser, is perfect for all ages and for anyone who likes chocolate.
Marc Bitler is terrific as Charlie Bucket, who lives in a sparsely-furnished, cold cottage with his extended family where money is tight.
James Stabp as Charlie's father, Mr. Bucket, and Pam Rutzky as Mrs. Bucket are believable as parents doing the best they can for their son.
Other members of the tight-knit family include Katie Halpin as Grandma Josephine, James Raymond as Grandpa George and Erinn Redfern as Grandma Georgina.
Halpin, also the choreographer for the show, played a second role as one of the Oompa Loompas.
Charlie buys a Wonka Bar wrapped in the last winning ticket for a special tour of Willie Wonka's Chocolate Factory.
Tall, lanky Cole Critchell shines as the wealthy, slightly wacky Willie Wonka.
Dan Tomansky is hilarious as Grandpa Joe.
He and Charlie go on the trip of a lifetime to the incredible, huge chocolate factory.
The factory workers, the Oompa Loompas, provide comic relief with their clever dances. Max Kubiak, Leah Poyo, Rhianna Radick and Lauren Smith portray the hard-working chocolatiers.
Radick and Poyo do double duty as cute News Reporter No. 2 and News Reporter No. 3, respectively.
Charlie meets some spoiled brats and their dysfunctional parents, who have also managed to get a Golden Ticket for the chocolate factory tour.
Big Augustus Gloop (Charlie Gallagher) is believable when his insatiable taste for chocolate gets him in over his head. Katie Wilson as his mother, Mr. Gloop, is formidable as an enabling and overbearing mother.
Kaitlyn Stein's Violet Beauregarde, a gum-chewing smart-aleck teen, is also one of the lucky ticket holders. Stein is perfect in this role which lands her in a "berry" peculiar situation. Her mother, Mrs. Beauregarde, played by tall, gorgeous Bonnie Jean Witkowski, shows great patience with her trying child.
Also on the Wonka factory tour is Patti-Lee Meringo as the hissy-fit throwing Veruca Salt. Meringo gives petulant and demanding perfection to the rich, spoiled Veruca.
As Veruca's mom, Mrs. Salt, Paige Kresge is wonderful as the indulgent mother ready to buy anything for her precious daughter. They both find they are right at home in the factory's "Nut Room."
Irritating Mike Teavee, brilliantly portrayed by Kait Joan Morton, is obnoxious, rude and disobedient all traits that get the Golden Ticket holder cut down to size. Mrs. Teavee, played by Kelly Whitley, is great as a mom who is relieved when her parental burdens are lessened.
Nikki Heckermann, as News Reporter No.1, is a sizzling beauty in a red skirt that would make any FoxNews anchorwoman proud.
Scenic Designer James Raymond does a fabulous job. He makes the small stage look huge.
Costume Designer Dan Tomansky outfits the cast in era-catching clothes and captured Wonka's eccentric personality perfectly.
