Zephs Emick finds it hard to say good-bye
Allison Emick plans to continue her swimming career in the future, but she had a hard time ending her current one.
Emick was one of nine seniors who ended their regular season as a member of the Whitehall girls' swimming program this spring, a campaign that was a memorable one in many ways. Three of her teammates - one senior - advanced to the PIAA state meet last weekend at Bucknell.
For Emick, it was the end of a productive and unforgettable time in her life.
"It was hard to say goodbye to everyone," said Emick. "We had a good season and a great four years together. We were such a tight group like a family. Everyone grew together and supported each other.
"I am very appreciative of everything that happened and wish our girls well this weekend."
Emick did qualify for districts this season, her third consecutive season. She posted qualifying times in the 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, and 500 freestyle.
"That is always exciting," noted Emick about participating in districts. "This season, I wanted to get there again and improve my times. I managed to do that throughout the season. I also knew we would have a good season as a whole. Swimming has always had a big role in my life."
Emick recalled how she began swimming in fifth grade as part of the Whitehall Waves program. She plunged into the program through the guidance of her mother Barbara, who swum in a summer league during her high school days.
"My mom said it was a good thing for me," stated Emick. "I really didn't like any other sport, so I figured I would try it. I tried both soccer and softball, but neither of them worked for me. I began to realize that I was better at sports in the water.
"People don't realize how dedicated you have to be with swimming because it can be hard at times. But I stuck with it and began a better swimmer over the years. It really proved to be a good outlet for me."
Whitehall head coach Pete Rile has appreciated her efforts over the years.
"Allison has really grown as a swimmer," said Rile. "She was very dedicated and had a sgood work ethic. (Emick) has also been a great teammate. She has had her share of highlights and will be missed next year."
Emick returned the compliments.
"Coach Pete (Rile) and coach Don (Roth) have been very supportive over the years and they have always pushed all of us to do better," said Emick. "They have helped us do some many good things and they have always been there for us."
Emick, who is a member of school's National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, and drama and chorus clubs, will look to pursue a career in either biology or psychology, and will likely attend Ursinus College. She also has been active in a church and choral group at First Presbyterian Church in Allentown for several years.
Since her freshman year, Emick has been an active participant in school plays. Swimming, acting, and singing appear to be in her future.
"I'd like to be able to continue all of them," she said. "It's time for me to move on, but I know swimming, acting and singing will continue to be a part of my life."
It appears she wouldn't want it any other way.
