Band shell undergoing restoration

The Borough of Northampton's band shell is undergoing restoration.

At a recent council meeting, borough Manager Gene Zarayko reported work has begun on the band shell, located in the municipal park off Laubach Avenue and Smith Lane.

Hurricane Sandy damaged the sides of the band shell and other parts of the wooden structure.

Recently officials discovered deterioration unrelated to the damage it sustained during the storm.

"Unfortunately, when the front clapboard was taken down, it was discovered that all the interior timbers are badly deteriorated. Therefore, that will have to be replaced," Zarayko said.

Further problems were uncovered as work progressed.

"There were squirrels living in the ceiling and they have chewed a lot of the wiring, which has to be repaired," Zarayko said.

The interior color will remain blue.

The arched design is intended for better acoustics.

The borough's portable band shell has been utilized at the park for special events, including a concert late last summer by the Celtic Adventure.

Bands will perform at the band shell during Community Days in July.

People attending concerts sit on blankets spread on the grass or on their own portable outdoor chairs.

The borough's insurance is expected to cover the costs of the restoration.
