If you're confused about what is going to happen to the Coplay Public Library, you now have an avenue for getting answers.

Library board President Natalie Reichl has invited anyone with questions to call her directly at 610-440-0252 or email savecoplaylibrary@gmail.com.

Reichl announced at the March 14 library board meeting that the email address had been established. She and board Vice President Michele Gruber will be answering the emails.

In addition to the email address, Save Coplay Library Political Committee has been formed to educate the public about the issues surrounding a referendum question which will appear on the May primary ballot. By law, political action committee members cannot be library staff members.

The referendum question reads, "Do you favor funding the Coplay Public Library by establishing an annual tax of 0.38 mills (38 cents per $1,000 of assessed real property value) on taxable real estate located within the Borough of Coplay?"

In February, Coplay Borough Council voted 4-1 to place the question on the ballot because, in order to remain open, the library needs a source of dedicated funding to replace money no longer provided by the Whitehall-Coplay School District.

The school district had provided approximately $71,000 annually to the library until the current school year. At the request of three council members, the school district provided "one-time, wind-down funding" in the amount of $48,000 for the 2012-13 school year.

The Whitehall Township Public Library was successful in getting a referendum passed to provide dedicated funding from Whitehall residents. Coplay library now hopes to do the same.

In December 2012, Reichl estimated the average Coplay homeowner would pay $35 annually if the referendum passes.

"The other thing that we need is money," Reichl said.

Committee members are working on the design for a trifold brochure and yard signs promoting the library and encouraging residents to vote "yes." Reichl estimates the brochures and signs will cost about $500.

Because the committee is properly registered with the state, contributions are tax deductible.

Any donations to the committee will be kept in an account separate from all library funds and used only for efforts to get the referendum passed.

"We'll take anything," she said.
