Emmaus Borough Council approved the use of bicycles in borough parks at the March 18 meeting.
Bicycles will be prohibited in Triangle Park and in pavilions located in borough parks but visitors will now be able to ride on trails and throughout recreational areas. Riders are suggested to use caution of any walkers and move slowly to promote the safety of all park visitors.
Grinding and vandalism of borough property will not be tolerated.
Council also passed a resolution to move forward with a review of borough parks by Barry Isett and Associates. The review is free of charge and will make the borough eligible for state grants through the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. The process was approved at the last meeting but it was necessary to pass a resolution to work out the details and express who is eligible to sign the paperwork as the process progresses.
Council voted to allow Rodale to use the pool 7 to 8 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays May 29 through Aug. 30. This has been done in previous years and the borough will charge $25 per session. Councilman Wesley Barrett also said the United States Slo-Pitch Softball Association has reserved borough baseball fields and the deal is scheduled to bring in over $9,000 this year.
In a meeting which started with a moment of silence for the victims and families of the victims of the March 17 fire in Emmaus, Borough Manager Shane Pepe ended the meeting by noting the dedication of all the emergency personnel in the borough. Pepe said members of the fire department, police and ambulance corps are struggling with the loss of multiple borough residents in the fire.
"I want to recognize our police, fire department and our ambulance corps for all they did in this tragedy," Pepe said. "I just want to acknowledge the fact we appreciate everything they do."
