Alburtis Borough Council passed a motion March 13 denying a request from PennDOT to plow their roads in the borough.
The contract includes more than plowing roads, said Councilman David Lehr of the highway committee. Plowing PennDOT roads would take away from the time it takes to plow the borough's roads; they have only so much equipment and they need to concentrate on borough roads. Also the borough would have to carry the liability and the price of salt would increase because more salt would be needed.
The highway committee recommended not taking the contract.
Ann Friedenheim, of Alburtis, emailed the borough office about prohibiting tractor trailers driving through the borough because of Jaindl's project in Lower Macungie Township. Solicitor David Knerr pointed out tractor trailers making local deliveries cannot be stopped. Some trucks do lose their way, especially if their GPS is not updated or sends them in the wrong direction.
Councilperson Sherryann Oels suggested putting a sign on the triangle pointing to Franklin Street, as it is borough property.
Snow emergency routes were briefly discussed and will be addressed later in the year.
The sign in remembrance of Althea and Jeannette Walbert was never put on the hockey court. Councilperson Kathleen Raines, chairperson of the park and recreation committee, wanted to know when the sign would be put up and who would pay for it. Council suggested contacting Longswamp U.C.C. to see if they would donate the sign or contacting a local Boy Scout Troop for a possible Eagle Scout project.
At 7:35 p.m. the meeting adjourned with council immediately going into an executive session to discuss 128 W. 2nd St. property.
