Middle school girl found dead
Whitehall-Coplay Middle School is in shock following the death of Jasmine Star Flores, 13, a seventh-grade student.
Jasmine took her own life last Wednesday in a wooded area near the Lehigh River in Coplay, according to Coplay police.
Middle school Assistant Principal Jeff Krempasky said the Whitehall-Coplay School District provided grief counselors for students last Thursday and Friday.
"We are attempting to return to normalcy," Krempasky said.
Jasmine was a member of the middle school track and field team. Her untimely death came as a surprise to those who knew her, he said.
Whitehall Police Lt. Ribello Bertoni said her parents called township police Tuesday at 5:39 p.m. reporting they last heard from their daughter at 2:50 p.m.
Bertoni said the police department kept its entire second shift on, combing the Ironton Rail-Trail and surrounding area.
"We had officers out searching for the missing girl until after midnight," Bertoni said. "It is sad."
Coplay Police Chief Vince Genovese received a call at 8:54 a.m Wednesday about "a girl [that] was in cardiac arrest." Genovese said the call came from people who were searching for Jasmine.
On arriving at the scene, Genovese said, the girl was nonresponsive.
Lehigh County First Deputy Coroner Eric Minnich pronounced Jasmine dead at the scene, ruling it a suicide. Genovese said no foul play or any suspicious activity was involved in Jasmine's death.
Genevese said Jasmine's body was found near the old Lehigh Valley Railroad bed between the river and the Ironton Rail-Trail, in a wooded area close to the trestle and an abandoned railroad crossing. The crossing is located between Coplay and Northampton, off South Front Street in Coplay.
"It is a tragedy," Genovese said.
