Coplay Community Days Chairman Steve Burker is Coplay's newest borough council member.

In a unanimous vote Tuesday night, Coplay Borough Council appointed Burker to fill a seat vacated by Michael Mazur, who resigned in January. Burker will serve until the end of the year. He must win the next election in order to continue serving into 2014.

"I wish to thank council for the appointment and opportunity to serve and work with each of my fellow council members in doing what is the right thing and best for my family, friends, neighbors and everyone who calls Coplay home," Burker said after the meeting.

At last week's workshop meeting, council members interviewed Burker and Bev Miller, who also applied for the vacant seat.

When nominations were opened at the regular meeting, Councilman Joseph Groller nominated Burker. No seconds are required for nominations.

When no one else was nominated, council President Lou Bodish closed nominations and Burker's selection was confirmed by a unanimous roll call vote.

In a prepared statement, Burker said he intends to devote the same passion to his position on council as he has done as chairman of community days for the past two years.

He said he had a different prepared statement ready in case he was not selected.

"I don't take anything for granted," he said.

After the 45-minute council meeting, Mayor Joseph Bundra swore in Burker, who was invited to stay for an executive session regarding possible litigation related to the construction of a driveway on North Fifth Street.
