School district Assistant Superintendent Dr. Lorie Hackett presented the Communities That Care Program during last Monday's Education/Student Activities Committee meeting of the Whitehall-Coplay School Board.

The program focuses on risk and protective factors in a community. The program allows school, community, local government, law enforcement, youth and family-serving agencies, parents, youth and other stakeholders to address issues that impact the wellness and future of youth in the community.

In other business, Athletic Director Robert Hartman presented a plan to build a scoreboard for the baseball field and a fence around the softball field. The board asked that Hartman return with the cost of the project before moving it on to the agenda for vote.

The school board also discussed the possibility of requiring uniforms for students.

"We are still in the process of looking at school districts that do and don't [require uniforms]. We are on the fence as we see the good and the bad," said Superintendent John Corby.

The board tabled the issue to be discussed after learning more about other districts that have implemented uniform policies.

Corby also spoke about the concern for safety and security during the Operations and Transportations Committee meeting.

"As a result of Connecticut we have began to look at some things. I'm recommending we look at security systems such as cameras," said Corby.

The school district already has cameras in place in some of its schools, but the new cameras would be more detailed.
