Maxatawny gives 'Giant' welcome to new store

An historical milestone in the evolution of the automobile was reached Feb. 27 when Charles Kettering demonstrated his new invention, an electric automobile starter shown in Detroit by starting a Cadillac motor with the touch of a switch. This occurred in 1911.

Locally, an historic event took place on that same date this year with the opening of the new Giant grocery store in Maxatawny Township.

Located just west of Kutztown, this 50,000-square-foot store is the 199th market in the chain. The 200th store will open later this year in Havertown.

This chain of stores, started in Carlisle by the Javitch family, was originally called Martin's.

Stores west and south of Altoona still use that name.

The Kutztown store will employ 150 people, most of them hired from the local area. Only 40 were transferred in from other locations.

Giant has a rewards card customers can use to earn gas points. Called the Giant Bonus Card, it can be redeemed at the gas island located near the store.

Longtime friend Carolee Bittle went along with this reporter to the store's preview night to provide a woman's point of view.

Bittle said Giant has a reputation for selling fresh seafood. She also commented on the large variety in the foods offered at the new store.

She was impressed with the wide aisles and the presentation of the displays.

The aisles were well lit and prices were easily readable.

Bittle said many items were bargains and Giant carries its own brand called Guaranteed Value.
