Peter Conzola takes boys top honor
Freedom swimmers, Peter Conzola, Scott DelFranco, Connor Harrigan, Eric Lawrence, and Sam Magnan will represent the Patriots at the PIAA State Swimming Championships on March 13-16 at Bucknell University after their winning performances at the District XI swim meet last weekend.
Conzola, who was named the male Swimmer of the Meet at districts, won the 100 butterfly in 51:02 and the 100 backstroke in 49.21. Conzola's backstroke broke the district record, previously held by Emmaus's Romain DeCrop of Emmaus, whose time was 50.28 in 2009.
Regarding Conzola's Swimmer of the Meet honors, Freedom coach Reik Foust said, "It has to do with the times in each event. Both Peter and Zachary Kantz from Bangor put up phenomenal times, but Pete's times were faster. They were very close in individual events."
DelFranco placed right behind Conzola in the 100 backstroke with a time of 51.79, and took third place in the 200 free in 1:43.32.
Magnan just missed first place in the 500 free by .72 seconds, coming in second in 4:36.84. Harrigan placed third in 4:38.96.
"Connor Harrigan, he dropped 15 seconds in the 500 and five seconds in the IM. He had some jaw-dropping swims. His 500 used to be 4:45, and then to swim a 4:38 was incredible. He really took off," Foust said.
DelFranco, Magnan, Eric Lawrence, and Conzola placed second in the 400 free relay in 3:14.29, and placed third in the 200 free relay in 1:29.09.
"I am proud of everyone. All had incredible swims and had their best times across the board," said Foust.
Foust is looking forward to the state meet for the first time as a head coach.
"Peter is seeded first in the backstroke and could possibly be a state champion. Sam Magnan is seeded sixth in the 500 free, and Connor's not too far behind. I am really excited to see how they do there," he said.
