Trojans top Easton for team title
If the dual meet season didn't supply Parkland's wrestling program with any championships, maybe the individual postseason can make up for that. A the District 11 touranment, he Trojans won the team title, crowned three champions and advanced 10 wrestlers to this weekend's Northeast Regional 3A tournament at Liberty.
Ethan Lizak (113), Josh Ortman (138) and Nezar Haddad (182) all came away with championships, as Parkland advanced five wrestlers into the championship round - tying with team runner-up Easton for finalists.
After losing to Easton three times during the dual meet season, the Trojans finally bit the Rovers for the individual team title last weekend.
"Our expectation was to win the district championship," head coach Ryan Nunamaker said. "In order to obtain our goal we needed every wrestler to perform to the best of their ability. We were fortunate to score enough points to edge Easton for the championship.
"We lost three really close dual meets this season to Easton, so it was nice to finally come out on top."
Lizak defended his district championship from a year ago by dismantling Pleasant Valley's Kenny Yanovich by a 9-1 major decision.
"It means a lot to win this because I work hard all season and feel like this is my reward," said Lizak. "I feel pretty good about where I'm at right now, but I know I have to get better before the state tournament."
Lizak, a defending district, regional and state champion from a year ago, spearheads the Trojans efforts heading into regionals this week. Ortman and Haddad both figure to be favorites again, as Ortman held off Bangor's Charles Sell by a 3-2 decision last week, while Haddad clipped Easton's Tyler Greene with a 3-1 victory in overtime.
Ian Evans (132) lost a tight bout with Easton's Robbie Rizzolino, falling 4-3 in a frustrating bout.
Omar Haddad (195) fell a point short of bringing home two gold medals for his family last week, losing to Dieruff's Jovon Reyes 2-1 in overtime.
Nunamaker knows that for his district finalists that lost last week, pushing the action will be key for them this week if they want to reverse their fates at regionals.
"Ian is an experienced varsity wrestler who will continue to close the gap against his opponent," Nunamaker said. "He needs to be more aggressive in the first period of the match in order to beat his opponent from Easton. Omar is having an outstanding sophomore season where he continues to improve each week. He has a great attack from the neutral position but tends to get tentative at times in the match. Omar just needs to open up and go after Reyes."
Jacob Lizak (106), Mike Marano (145) and Shaun Heist (220) each took third, while Nathan Christman (160) took fourth.
Billy Hoh (152) was the lone Trojan to find himself in the fifth place consolation round and survived another week by pinning Freedom's Josh Young in 1:17.
With the prospects of the top three place-winners at each qualifying for the PIAA tournament next week, Parkland now reshifts its focus towards producing results at regionals.
"I think we can realistically qualify seven or eight guys for states," said Nunamaker. "That would be an incredible number of guys, but it is possible if our kids peek this week in their training and preparation."
