Liberty big men prove too much for Parkland
Back on January 8, nobody could stop the Parkland boys basketball team from putting the ball in the net.
The Trojans scored 90 points in a win over Liberty to set a season-high not only Parkland, but for any team in the Lehigh Valley Conference.
Last Friday night in a rematch for the league crown, it was a different story.
Liberty (17-7) dominated the glass with its size advantage, and held the Trojans to almost half of their previous output, in dominating the LVC final 66-48 at Easton Area Middle School.
Justin Zajko (10 points) forced a steal and turned it into a layup at the other end for an early 2-0 advantage. From that point, Parkland (17-7) never held another lead.
The Hurricanes scored the next seven points and never looked back.
The return of starting big man Deshawn Oyeniyi was a big part in that dominating performance on both the scoreboard and the glass. Oyeniyi missed the regular season meeting due to academic issues, but Friday night he contributed a team-high 19 points, and added seven rebounds.
"I definitely think he made a difference," head coach Andy Stephens said about Oyeniyi. "He's a big, strong, physical kid. They're much bigger and more physical inside than we are, especially with him in there. Combine that with we didn't shoot the ball well, and you're in trouble."
Parkland had trouble scoring in the first half. The Trojans shot 4-for-14 in the opening eight minutes, and 6-for-25 overall in the first half.
They trailed 31-20 at halftime, and what kept Parkland in the game was a combination of good free throw shooting and Liberty's poor free throw shooting.
Parkland tried to make some runs at Liberty in the second half, but couldn't seem to cut the deficit to single digits. When they did, it did not last long.
"We played them even for most of the second half," said Stephens. "We just didn't in the first half. It wasn't like we were making bad plays, it was that they were that good tonight."
Junior swingman Nick Rindock had an all-around good game, and did his part to keep his team within striking distance in the second half. Rindock had a game-high 21 points, and grabbed seven rebounds.
"At first we weren't shooting real well, so we wanted to be aggressive and get to the hoop," Stephens said. "Nick was able to do that for us. He got to the foul line a bunch of times and was able to score in a variety of ways."
A brief flurry for the Trojans cut a Hurricanes lead to 50-41 with a little over two minutes to go, but the Hurricanes went on an 8-0 run to finish off the game. Pat Donnelly and KJ Williams each tallied five points in the final frame.
Austin Beidelman (10 points) and Jimmy Hahn (seven) were the only other Trojans scorers.
Parkland will now look to get back to the district final, where they lost to Pocono Mountain West a year ago. District play started Wednesday night with a home game against East Stroudsburg South.
