Strauss, Salvaggio lead swimmers past Liberty
Parkland's final league meet before the postseason was also one of the most important in terms momentum. With one loss each, the Liberty boys and girls would prove to be a tough test, especially swimming in their final home league meet.
The Trojans were up to the task. The girls stayed undefeated with a close 105-81 win, and the boys controlled their meet by taking it 134-52 last Thursday night at Liberty.
Chris Strauss and Rhett Karopoulos won each event that they swam in, leading the way in the lopsided win.
Strauss placed first in the 200 and 500 free, taking the 500 by 20 seconds.
"I had a nice break after diving," the senior said. "That helps because it breaks up the events a bit. I know I have a lot of competition from Freedom and Emmaus breathing down my neck. So I just want to keep up with the pace that the [Lehigh] Valley is setting."
Strauss also admitted that some teammates wanted him to go under five minutes. His final time in the 500 was 4:52.68.
Karopoulos took first in the 200 IM and 100 free. The two also anchored the winning 200 and 400 free relays. Harris Nagle and Alex Bukoski contributed to the 200 win, while Colin Orlowski and Jack Walton were part of the victorious 400 team.
Other winners include Bukoski (100 breast), Orlowski (100 back), Aviad Mana (100 fly) and Mitchell Keller (50 free). Keller, Bukoski, Adam Sicinski and Joey Fasching won the 200 medley relay.
It was a strong night for the boys, with each event being won by a Trojan. This is something Strauss wants to continue down the line.
"This was a strong win for us," said Strauss. "Just something that we can use going forward."
On the girls end, it was a freshman that was proving her worth and leading Parkland to some first place finishes.
Siena Salvaggio won the 100 and 200 free individually, and helped anchor the 200 and 400 free relays.
"The Liberty meet is a big meet for us," Salvaggio said. "It's definitely a stepping stone and one of our biggest meets. I've been helped out so much by our seniors, calming me down and telling me what to do. I'm just glad I can help out however I can."
Senior Megan Polaha continued her dominance, taking the 200 IM and 100 fly. She was also a part of the winning 200 medley relay (Polaha, Katherine Kapelsohn, Emily Kingston, Abby Walsh), and 400 free relay (Polaha, Salvaggio, Erika Freeman, Erin Jordan).
The girls also dominated, having a first place finisher in each event. Freeman (100 breast), Jordan (100 back and 500 free), and Walsh (50 free) were also winners on the night.
"I want to get faster and help out the team more on the relays," said Salvaggio. "I've usually been leading off with the relays. I just want to be there for the team especially with districts coming up."
Parkland has one more meet in the regular season against Salisbury before districts begin.
