The Friends of the Whitehall Public Library is an organization that's been in existence since 1985.

It's purpose, said group President Nick Potenzi, is to help raise funds for the library and actively participate in the community.

"We meet to plan and participate in community activities in support of the library and its services," Potenzi said. "Our number one money making project is the running of the book sale which is open every day the library is open."

Some of the events the organization has participated in include Whitehall Community Days, Whitehall Fall Festival and last fall's back-to-school event held by Boscov's.

The organization is open to both Whitehall community members and residents of the surrounding areas. Yearly fees are $5 for individuals, $7.50 for a family, $3 for seniors, $25 for a business or $50 for patrons. A lifetime membership costs $100. Current membership totals 63.

Meetings take place the second Wednesday of every month at 2:30 p.m. in the meeting room of the library. During the meeting, the organization conducts regular business as well as discusses new fundraising ideas.

Current officers include Potenzi; Marty Beaton, vice president; Carol Knerr, secretary; and Pat Kaligis, treasurer.

"The Whitehall Public library is a true treasure," Potenzi said. "I don't think there is anyone who would not say that the library aided in their development. It provides many services that help people grow, live life and become an important part of our community. That's why we [Friends of the Whitehall Public Library] continue to support the library and the reason why anyone should consider becoming a member."
